Tomorrow I head back to work. I am a mix of emotions – sad, excited, a little nervous, and surprised that the return to work is already here. This is going to be a big transition for everyone in the family, as we all adjust to a new schedule.
My maternity leave has been such a blessing. I’ve loved spending time at home with all 3 kids and doing tons of activities with the kids. We have had so many outings, play dates, volunteer time at church, lunches, naps, outside play, walks/runs, etc. These will definitely be missed when I go back to work 3 days a week.
I’ll also miss seeing their sweet little faces all day. This will be the toughest. Pictures of the kids while I am at work just isn’t the same. I really love being close to them, helping them learn/grow, and teaching them. Even though they can be demanding beyond words, I love being able to help them out.
There will be good things about going back to work though too. I am going to enjoy having adult conversations, being able to use my brain and knowledge to influence decisions, and getting a paycheck again. Those will be nice!
One year ago, I was on the other side of this, starting my maternity leave. My biggest worry was how I was ever going to function with 3 kids. I felt like we were never going to be able to leave the house, but wow – we have come a long way! I am now confident taking the 3 kids out (almost anywhere) on my own. We may have a meltdown here or there, but we survive and usually have some fun too.
Just like we survived (and thrived) during my maternity leave, I am hoping we figure out how to do so while I am back at work. I’m hoping to keep my priorities in line: spending time with God every day, exercising, engaging with the kids, and making time for the occasional date night. Hopefully in a few months we will be thriving in our new routine, keeping the top priorities going!
